Handicapping 101

Horse race handicapping with free past performances epitomizes the phrase “read between the lines” because it involves the literal analysis of what are known as the “running lines” of a horses’ previous races. There are usually somewhere around 10 running lines per horse in a race.

Each horse and their running lines comprise the past performances for a race. The running lines are viewed individually and collectively to form an opinion or predict the outcome of the race. It’s not easy. But if you follow a handful of tracks, trainers, and sires you’ll begin to notice patterns and predict winners quickly, and with surprising accuracy.

Handicappers take great pride and great care in making their selections. Their prediction, or “pick”, becomes grounds for debate before and after a race. And, making the “angles” of a race the foundation for picking winners.

Race 6 – Juvenile Turf Sprint

We’re most proud of our selections in the two races that set the stage for Kentucky Derby 2023.

In the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, Wonder Wheel was our program pick to win.

Wonder Wheel gained attention as the front-running winner of the G1 Alcibiades at Keeneland giving her the home field advantage with a winning race over the Keeneland surface. And confirming what is probably the single most important angle when handicapping the races.

Sent off at odds of nearly 7 to 1, she paid $15 for a $2 win ticket.

Race 8 – Juvenile Fillies Turf

In the Juvenile Fillies Turf we tried to beat the favorite Meditate and made her our second choice.

Race 9 – Juvenile

In the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Forte was our program pick to win.

Forte, like Wonder Wheel, gained attention as a winner over the Keeneland surface in his final prep for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile by winning the G1 Breeders’ Futurity.

Sent off at odds of 5 to 1, Forte paid $12.04 for a $2 win ticket. The Exacta payoff for a $2 ticket was $27.40.

Race 10 – Juvenile Turf

In the Juvenile Turf, Silver Knott was our pick. After a rail skimming ride by jockey William Buick and a thrilling squeeze through a very small hole in deep stretch, he was nosed out by our “In Play” horse Victoria Road for the win.
